What is the PhET + metacog partnership?

With the brilliant PhET simulations you have always had best-in-class interactive simulations for science and math. By adding metacog, PhET now brings you the ability to have data-enabled learning objects that can train the metacog machine learning system to rigorously score open ended-activities, let you visualize HOW and WHY they got it wrong (or right), what concepts they are missing and what process was followed. These new capabilities can generate new insights and discussions into metacognitive processes and support standards like Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Score PhET-based activities and tasks automatically

PARCC, Smarter Balanced and Common Core standards enable much deeper assessment challenges to help college and career readiness and to develop complex 21st century problem-solving skills. NGSS also emphasizes evidence-based demonstration of procedural knowledge and cannot be practicably assessed utilizing multiple-choice automated scoring.
The problem is that there has been no ability (other than time-consuming hand-scoring) to score open ended challenges at scale that the new standards and guidelines enable. Enter metacog’s Invisible Integrated Assessment…

What type of data does metacog collect?
As users interact with the Services, metacog streams various types of process data based on interactions with a learning object. This data is limited to how learners solve challenges, and there is no personally identifiable information (PII), only keys representing anonymous users. We limit the data we collect to only what we believe is necessary to provide a better learning experience - process data on learning challenges.We do not ask Children, publishers, or assessment companies to submit Personally Identifiable Information. In unexpected instances we may unintentionally be sent persistent identifiers but these are anonymized and still secure and owned by the creators of the content, not metacog. -
Does metacog sell learner data?We do not collect, use, or share any personal learner Information from users. We do not rent or sell your learner process Information to anyone. We use it as necessary to provide the Services, to comply with laws or as instructed by you. This Privacy Policy does not limit our ability to use Non-Personal Data — anonymized data that cannot be associated with an individual — for business purposes, to provide better more valuable learning analytics, and to provide diagnostics services to our customers.There are optional ways we may use and share Information we collect from users who have created a metacog account. We will only do this with your permission.

Why does metacog collect learner data?As students solve learning challenges, metacog can yield incredibly fine grained information about student performance behavior: how they think, how they approach difficult problems, whether they try very hard or give up easily. Metacog can inform learning guardians if a learner has misconceptions, and whether they are struggling or bored.
We believe this type of information can replace the activity of stopping the learning process for testing and massively improve the information intelligence we can provide to instructors to help them target their valuable time where and when it is most needed.The rich data streams generated by learners as they solve challenges can be used to understand not only how they came to their final answer, but also to assess the quality of the learning objects themselves and to more deeply understand where students are and what they should be doing next.

Can I incorporate metacog into existing products?Metacog was built to make it easy to instrument existing learning objects as well as brand new learning products. Metacog is built as a service that is very cost-effective compared to building and maintaining a highly performant Internet scale data infrastructure and platform and is value-priced based on volume.
